(Sinus- a blind track leading from the surfaces down to the tissues
 Fistula – a communicating track between 2 epithelial surfaces)
1.       Duration
2.       Mode of onset
·         Congenital (branchial fistula)
·         Following incision and drainage of an abscess (perianal fistula)
·         Following incomplete excision of a congenital swelling e.g. (thyroglossal fistula )
3.       Preceding  history of swelling, pain and fever
4.       History of discharge:
·         Type of discharge(purulent, mucus, bilious, feculent or urine)
·         Any discharge of bony spicules (osteomyelitis)
·         Quantity of discharge, color and odour
5.       Progress
·         Sometimes discharge may stop
6.       Any history of pain
7.       History of fever
8.       Past history
·         History of tuberculosis
·         Actinomycosis
·         Inflammatory bowel disease
·         History of operation
